Continuing and Professional Studies promotes New Year, New You programming

Continuing and Professional Education, under the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, is offering a new program course called “New Year, New You.”

According to the Director of Continuing and Professional Education, Angie Woodham, 2023 is a new start for the department with a full staff. Since COVID, the department has struggled to host as many programs due to short staff, so this new program will be the unit’s reintroduction of community engagements.

“Each year is a new start for both us and individuals in the community,” said Woodham. “This will be our jumpstart into community engagement programs again and we are excited to be offering these classes.”

Community engagement classes provided to the community have a focus on science, technology, arts, and education, according to the department’s website.

Under the New Year, New You program, a total of five currently confirmed classes will be offered.

Notably, yoga will be returning on Tuesdays, Jan. 3-31, led by Heidi Mead. This program will be personalized to the participant’s skill level and ensure a complete workout that promotes relaxation and peace.

“This was a very popular class that we used to offer and we are proud to see it return,” said Woodham.

“Heidi is a wonderful teacher and we are thankful for her.”

Woodham also highlighted a new workshop called “New Year, New You: Get Organized!” that will be making a debut on Jan. 18. This workshop is led by Stephanie McClure, who previously led the class at her local church. The workshop will walk participants through reflecting on their connection to “stuff” and the challenges related to clutter/organization by identifying barriers to successful organization and building strategies to address those barriers.

“This workshop is individually customized to help participants build skills while in the classroom,” said Woodham.

“This class was very well-received at Dr.

McClure’s church so we are excited to bring it to GCSU.”

Alongside these two classes, New Year, New You will also be offering Voice Lessons led by Addison Resh in mid-January, Milly Fit Moms led by Lindsey DeSantis starting Feb. 4 and Active Mini Milly’s with Lindsey DeSantis starting Feb. 4.

“These courses are at the heart of what the community thinks of when they refer to our unit,” said Woodham. “We are evolving as a department from the traditional community enrichment program to encompass more workforce development. This allows our programs to not only enrich but now educate and build skills.”

New Year, New You programming will be occurring throughout the GCSU spring semester and if the program does well, Woodham hopes to make it an annual staple for the department.
