Central State Hospital walking tours return soon

>> LOCAL HISTORY

Georgia’s Old Capital Heritage Center at the Depot, Inc., in partnership with Seeking Asylum LLC, has announced dates for this year’s Central State Hospital Haunting History Tours.

Each immersive walking tour invites visitors to explore the grounds for a glimpse into the complex history of mental health treatment at what was once the largest mental institution in the world.

Tours led by CSH historian and award-winning photographer Jessica Whitehead begin and end at the CSH Museum in the historic train depot-storehouse on the hospital grounds (95 Depot Circle, Milledgeville).

The Haunting History Tour shares chilling stories from Central State Hospital’s past. While the subject matter can be unsettling, the tour’s mission is rooted in education and advocacy.

Haunting History Tours will take place on the first and third Saturdays of each month from March through September and October. All tours begin at 6 p.m.; however, guests should arrive at the CSH Museum by 5:30 p.m. to check in and sign waivers.

This is a walking tour conducted entirely outdoors. Tours do not enter any buildings and may be delayed or rescheduled due to inclement weather. Tickets are $25 each, nonrefundable, and include admission to the museum.

Tours begin March 21, followed by April 4 and 18, May 2 and 16, June 6 and 20, July 4 and 18, Aug. 1 and 15, Sept. 5 and 19, and Oct. 23-24 and 30-31.
