The Baldwin County Board of Commissioners adopted a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) referendum during Tuesday’s meeting.
Baldwin County Assistant Manager Dawn Hudson read the resolution which requested the approval of an election referendum.
“We need a vote from the board to approve this resolution to move forward with our Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax referendum that will be on March 21,” said Hudson.
The board unanimously approved the resolution, excluding commissioner Johnny Westmoreland who was not in attendance.
In addition to this approval, the board unanimously approved Baldwin County opposing the truck weight increase in the state of Georgia.
“The state of Georgia has created legislation that will increase truck weights to 90,000 lbs.,” said Henry Craig, commissioner. “Many counties across the state have shared their opposition to this because bridges are not evaluated for that weight and our roads in Baldwin County are in need of repair.”
According to the board’s resolution of opposition, heavier trucks would endanger pedestrians, motorists, and damage roadways. The resolution also emphasized that the Georgia Department of Transportation has concluded that trucks over 80,000 lbs. have higher crash rates.
A copy of the resolution will be forwarded to officials with the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia, the Georgia Department of Transportation commissioner and Baldwin County legislative representatives: state Sen. Rick Williams, state Reps. Mack Jackson and Ken Vance.
