Georgia College & State University’s High Achievers program held its “Lights on Afterschool” celebration Oct. 26 as part of a nationwide initiative to highlight the benefits and accomplishments of middle and high school after-school programs.
The celebration took place at GCSU’s East Campus where students split into groups to participate in a scenic walk through the campus nature trail, appealing to the High Achievers program’s physical health initiative. Afterward, students visited Lake Laurel, located in the center of East Campus, to examine bugs, fish, and other creatures under microscopes.
“Our students are the greatest ambassadors for the importance of afterschool programs,” said Kenneth Daniels, the High Achievers program coordinator. “We must invest in and serve our youth; they are members of and the future of the community.”
Kingston Jenkins, a high school senior, has been part of the High Achievers program for 11 years.
“My experience in the program has helped me become patient, with my leadership and with speaking publicly. My confidence has also grown through the team-building activities and just giving back to the community,” said Jenkins.
Nevaeh Jones, a High Achievers program group leader, helps facilitate activities. Leading the mental health components, Jones emphasized how the program aims to teach students skills for life.
“The work we do in the after-school program broadens their minds. Activities help them understand the topics so that they can apply them to their own lives.”
The program, hosted by the GCSU Academic Outreach team, was led by Director of Academic Outreach Ruth Eilers alongside college students Haley Quimby and Ella Claire Beason.
“I've noticed that the kids really enjoy all of our hands-on activities. These events have helped me get to know a lot of people in the community I otherwise wouldn’t have ever gotten to meet,” said Quimby.
Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, High Achievers hosts activities and provides meals for students. The 2025 Lights on Afterschool celebration got students outside and moving through nature trails, reinforcing the program’s commitment to physical and mental wellness. Through events like this, the High Achievers program continues to highlight the importance of afterschool learning through STEAM activities.
