Georgia Military College (GMC) announced that Grace Houghton, a Junior College Service Academy scholar, has been accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point, becoming the first scholar in GMC’s Class of 2025 (69 Cadets) to receive a U.S. Service Academy appointment. Houghton’s achievement highlights a dedication to her lifelong goal of service by joining the prestigious “Long Gray Line.”
Houghton came to Georgia Military College as a non-sponsored scholar last school year, seeking an appointment to one of the nation’s service academies. Though unsuccessful last spring, Houghton has been a standout student-athlete, being the top female runner in Georgia in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Women’s Cross Country during her first year. Despite not receiving an appointment that year, Houghton’s resolve never wavered. She returned to GMC for her second year, determined to demonstrate her commitment and academic excellence, an effort that culminated in her appointment to West Point.
This milestone speaks to the unparalleled success of GMC’s Service Academy Preparatory Program. Since its inception, GMC has seen 360 appointments out of 394 Scholars, achieving a 91.37% success rate. For sponsored scholars, the success rate is even higher at 93.08%. Over the past five years alone, the program has maintained a stellar 93.09% appointment rate.
“This is a proud moment for Georgia Military College,” said GMC President Lieutenant General William B. Caldwell, IV (Ret). “Grace Houghton’s achievement is a testament to her hard work and the dedication of our faculty and staff who prepare scholars to reach their full potential. We could not be more proud of Grace and how hard she has worked to achieve this goal. We look forward to seeing her continued success as she joins the ranks of West Point Cadets this summer.”
GMC’s Service Academy Preparatory Program remains a cornerstone of its mission to develop authentic servant leaders for the nation. The program supports scholars in their pursuit of appointments to the nation’s U.S. Service Academies, serving as certified prep school for the U.S. Military Academy – West Point, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and the U.S. Naval Academy. With Houghton as the first of many appointments expected in 2025, GMC is excited for the year ahead and the future successes of its scholars.
