Allied Arts hosts quilting challenge for Middle Georgia

Allied Arts is hosting its first ever quilting challenge for the Middle Georgia region.

“Cookie Noelle, who is a part of Friends of Allied Arts, suggested the idea,” said Kristin Allen, program director at Allied Arts. “Cookie is a part of the Lake Oconee Quilters guild. They have submitted to our previous exhibits and were very enthusiastic about having an exhibit dedicated to their craft.”

Crafts dedicated to layering and stitching fabric date back as early as Egyptian times and have evolved through time, culture, and societal perception. Nowadays there are many ways to craft using fabric and thread.

“It is a historic art and we want to highlight that aspect by giving people the freedom to create what they want, rather than binding it to a theme,” said Allen. “We want to keep this art form alive and it’s part of Allied Arts mission to educate and honor a variety of art forms.”

Anyone can register by Oct. 27 and submit up to three pieces of quilted creations that are no larger than 40x40 inches. Submissions are due between Oct. 20-27 at 201 N. Wayne Street. There is a $25 registration fee.

Winners will be recognized at the reception on Nov. 7 from 5-7 p.m. The first-place winner will be awarded $250, second-place $175, and third-place $100. All submissions will be exhibited through the month of November.

The Marlor House is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. To register, visit milledgevillealliedarts. com. For questions, call 478- 452-3950.
