Last week, Allen’s Market became the setting for a beginner ballroom dance class hosted by Allied Arts and led by instructors Steven Graham and Rachael Smith.
The class welcomed dancers of all experience levels, with many participants attending a ballroom class for the first time. Couples and individuals stood side by side as Graham explained the basics of tango, focusing on posture, rhythm, and simple footwork. The lesson moved at a steady pace, allowing dancers time to repeat steps and ask questions as they practiced.
Graham said his interest in teaching ballroom dance began when he noticed how dancing can help people connect, particularly couples. He explained that ballroom dancing is not as common in social spaces as it once was and he wanted to make it more accessible to the community.
Rather than preparing dancers for competitions or performances, the class focused on introducing ballroom dance in a relaxed way.
“I don’t do this to train people for Dancing with the Stars,” Graham said. “I want people to feel welcome and have fun learning.”
Throughout the hour, dancers rotated partners and practiced short combinations while the instructors walked around the room offering guidance. Mistakes were common and expected, which helped keep the atmosphere low pressure. Participants laughed, adjusted their steps, and continued practicing without concern for getting everything exactly right.
The class was designed for a wide range of people, including couples, individuals, and anyone interested in trying ballroom dance.
No partner or prior experience was required. Holding the class at Allen’s Market rather than in a traditional studio also contributed to the casual and welcoming environment.
Allied Arts offers ballroom dance classes throughout the year, with different dance styles featured each week. Classes cost $15 per person and are open to the public, with payment available at the door or online at milledgevillealliedarts. com.
