Music, community and spring vibes fill front campus at Art & JazzFest

Students and community members gathered on the front campus of Georgia College & State University Saturday evening for Art & JazzFest, bringing music, energy and a relaxed spring atmosphere to Milledgeville.

Held from the afternoon into the evening, the event featured live performances from the university’s Jazz Band along with guest trombonist Marcus Lewis. Directed by Cliff Towner, the concert blended classical and contemporary jazz styles, giving the audience a mix of smooth, upbeat and expressive sounds.

As the sun started to set, students spread out blankets across the lawn and sat with friends, creating a laidback, picnic-style environment. Some brought snacks and drinks, while others simply relaxed and listened, letting the music carry through the warm evening air.

The Jazz Band stood out with its strong energy and tight sound, especially during faster pieces where the rhythm section really came alive. Lewis also brought a unique presence to the stage, with his trombone adding a bold and expressive layer to the performance. His solos drew attention from the crowd and added a more personal, emotional feel to the show.

The setting itself played a big role in the experience. Being outside on front campus made the event feel open and welcoming, and as it got darker, the combination of music and the night sky made it even more memorable.

Events like Art & JazzFest highlight how music can bring people together in a simple but meaningful way. For many students, it was a chance to take a break from school, hang out with friends and enjoy live music right on campus.

Overall, the night felt easygoing and fun, showing how something as simple as a concert on the lawn can create a strong sense of community.
