The doors of Mary Vinson Memorial Library finally swung open on a crisp winter day. Patrons were gifted with a new and improved library after almost a full year of renovations that saw the building go through its first major renovation project.
Since 1938, the Mary Vinson Memorial Library has been a pivotal element of the Milledgeville community. Following completion of the current 18,900-square-foot building in 1986, it has stood tall on Jefferson Street with no changes made to the structure.
After 39 years, the Vinson Library closed for 10 months to complete renovations planned several years earlier. This closure meant residents would need to go to the Hancock Branch and Lake Sinclair libraries.
These renovations that took a little under a year have finally come to an end as Baldwin County residents may once again make use of the facility.
The main purpose of these renovations was to expand the library’s technological space and grow to be able to establish a better space for the community. With an updated look and new additions, the Vinson Library looks to be poised for a big return.
The renovations saw the Vinson Library completely update the interior and reposition the entrance to the building, with the goal of modernizing the 1980s architecture that has stood since its completion.
These major renovations were funded by the Georgia Public Library Service as they poured in nearly $1.5 million to complete all desired changes to create a better establishment for the community.
Outside of the changes to the interior, there were some other major changes that patrons should be excited to see. The local history room and meeting rooms were moved, and parking was updated to make it easier for guests.
In addition to these changes, the Mary Vinson Library is now offering some new resources, including more resources for adult literacy programs, better technological access, and more resources to keep the building in top shape.
These renovations ended on Jan. 6, and now the library is fully functional again. So as the city of Milledgeville and Baldwin County return to the library with all these changes, guests can expect a better experience.
