Johnny Wheeler was a decorated Vietnam War hero, earning two bronze stars and the respect of his fellow soldiers. Specialist Fourth Class Wheeler was killed in action on Aug. 23, 1967.
Now, Wheeler, Georgia Military College Corp of Cadets Class of 1961, is the latest inductee into the school’s Hall of Heroes, which is “the highest recognition bestowed upon an alumnus of the Corps of Cadets, honoring individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary service to our nation while bringing distinction to Georgia Military College.”
A native of St. Marys along the Georgia coast, Wheeler was awarded his first Bronze Star for heroism in action on May 29, 1967, when his platoon came under intense enemy fire from a Viet Cong force concealed in fortified positions. As the enemy maneuvered to flank the platoon, Wheeler recognized that his platoon sergeant was in immediate danger. With complete disregard for his own safety, he moved forward under heavy fire, drawing the enemy’s attention and delivering accurate rifle fire that eliminated the threat — saving the life of his platoon sergeant and helping protect his fellow soldiers.
His second Bronze Star Medal was awarded posthumously for meritorious service from Jan. 20 through Aug. 18, 1967, and in connection with military operations against a hostile force.
