WIL PETTY/Staff A display showcases the gloves and cleats Sony Michel wore in his Rose Bowl performance against Oklahoma.

The Hancock Branch of the Twin Lakes Library System was the host of some memorable pieces of University of Georgia sports history on Tuesday, June 4.

A wide number of invaluable items were showcased including Herschel Walker’s football helmet, the gloves Sony Michel wore when scoring the game winning touchdown in the 2018 Rose Bowl against Oklahoma and the jersey wore by track star Keturah Orji during the 2016 Rio Olympics.

A silver chalice given to the 1894 Georgia Bulldogs after defeating its oldest rival, Auburn, in Atlanta was also showcased, and is considered to be one of the oldest relics in college football history. It was the second game ever in the series between the Dawgs and Tigers, deemed The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, with UGA winning 10-8.

Other display items included pieces of the goal post from UGA’s 1943 Rose Bowl win, tickets from UGA’s 1929 home game versus Yale and a variety of pictures showcasing Georgia’s sports history.

The items came from the University’s Hargrett Library collection.
