Compelling questions ... and maybe a few actual answers
Could this be a “when life gives you lemons” moment?
Quite possibly, both in the short and long term for NASCAR. In the short term, Sunday’s enjoyable iRacing from “Homestead” didn’t provide a long-term answer to the combination of anxiety and boredom associated with the current pandemic. It was a neat diversion and another race (or two) might be in order, and if they do, it’d be interesting to try one of the available dirt tracks to gauge the performance and reaction. Also, I believe Rockingham is an iRacing option.
And longer term?
NASCAR officials say they plan to squeeze in all 36 races this season, which means they’ll have to get creative with scheduling. If they have any desires to “test drive” ideas, this is the time to do it. Not just weekend doubleheaders, such as they’ve already scheduled at Pocono this summer, but maybe a NASCAR-IndyCar doubleheader somewhere.
Is an early-May return at Martinsville likely?
Scheduled, yes. Likely, we’ll see. Eventually, we’ll wake up and the news will start trending toward the positive. Hopefully that’ll happen soon and Martinsville is a reality instead of a hope. I’ll put it at 50-50 right now.
