DCH, DPH data still differ

Posted in:

Baldwin County’s official COVID-19 death total was 14, as of press time earlier this week.

The math, however, says otherwise.

Ten COVID-19 “client deaths” have now been reported at the Bostick Nursing Center and eight more at the nearby Georgia War Veterans Home, according to the Georgia Department of Community Health. Another death has been reported by the Department of Corrections at Baldwin State Prison, bringing the “longterm facility” death total to 19.

There continues to be a chasm between the Department of Public Health’s reporting and the Department of Community Health’s reporting. On Monday evening, the DPH’s North Central Health District posted four deaths for the Bostick Nursing Center and seven for the Veteran’s Home. On the same day, however, DCH’s database showed 10 deaths at Bostick and eight at the Veteran’s Home.

DPH is the agency tasked to provide the “official numbers,” and the DPH database is the one that’s become so popular with many Georgia residents in recent months.

The disparity is even more pronounced in next-door Hancock County. Early last week, the DCH was reporting 13 client deaths at Sparta Health and Rehab. That number has since risen to 15, according to the DCH. Earlier this week, however, the DPH’s working number was still three, which was the same number that it had last week.
